Day 2: Advanced BSA (Part 1)
We will begin the day with a focus on understanding Criminology and the motive(s) behind why and how someone chooses to commit financial crime. Any good investigator should possess critical and analytical thinking as a skillset, so we will discuss the differences between the two and uncover how you can apply them to investigations. Risk-based decision-making is the foundation of an effective financial crimes program, so we will review the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework. Rounding out the morning before lunch, we will cover scams and fraudulent schemes and how they lead to financial crime.
The afternoon will begin with some key BSA program considerations and the connection of all types of illegal activity. We will delve into terrorist financing with a focus on ādomestic terrorismā and FinCEN guidance on Hamas. Red flags of terrorist financing, proliferation financing, maritime sector and Dealers in Presciou Metals and Stones. We will also consider a risk-based approach for high-risk customers including PEPs. Then we consider key lessons from consent orders and red flags of various payment types for human trafficking. We will conclude the day with program considerations for cannabis and other drugs that will be applicable whether or not you actually bank these types of customers.
